Zen Horse

One of the best ways to teach your horse to lope slow on a loose rein is the Cruising Lesson. It also helps establish a gas pedal which will help you control impulsion in later exercises and will make your horse responsible for maintaining the gait you set until you tell him to do something else. For you, this exercise will also help build your confidence, a more secure seat and better balance.

The trouble is, most people do the Cruising Lesson once or twice and they think they’re done with it. For the Cruising Lesson to work the way it’s supposed to, I recommend Cruising at the canter for 10-20 minutes a day for seven days in a row. Don’t have seven days in a row to ride? No worries! Just Cruise with your horse at the canter for 10 minutes or so every time you ride him, and when he can maintain a good consistent lope for 10 minutes without your having to correct him, you’ll know he’s ready to move on to more advanced exercises.
