Inspire Me

I received this message from Neale Donald Walsh. This Sunday morning I am truly feeling its message.

...that less and less do you need to force things, until
you finally arrive at non-action.

This is the message of the Tao Te Ching, and it is
true. Werner Erhard has taught, "Life will resolve
itself in the process of Life Itself." Byron Katie says
that liberation is "Loving What Is."

And Stephen Mitchell calls non-action "the purest and
most effective form of action. The game plays the game;
the poem writes the poem; we can't tell the dancer from
the dance."

Perhaps the best thing you can do right now is nothing
at all.

No one could ride a horse if the horse discovered its real strength. The same thing is true for people.

"Horses are massive, gentle creatures who are by far larger and stronger than the men and women who handle them, yet they docilely obey the commands they are given. It doesn't seem logical that a large, powerful animal would allow itself to be mastered by a human being, yet we have been able to use our intelligence to dominate the animal kingdom. You can use these same forces to allow the positive side of yourself to dominate the negative. A Positive Mental Attitude allows you to tap the source of great power that resides within you, enabling you to accomplish things you never before believed were possible."

Zen Horse

Training Tip of the Week:
You have to be willing to change.
By Clinton Anderson

If you want your horse to change, you must be willing to change yourself and put in the effort necessary to get a responsive, safe partner. When I was an apprentice for Ian Francis, he often said to me, “To change your life, you must first change your attitude.” Ian believes, as do I, that if you’re unhappy with the current state of your life, you need to change your attitude and perceive your life the way you’d like for it to be and in turn follow through with the action to make it happen.

I’ve incorporated that saying into training horses – “If you want to change your horse, you must first change the way you interact with him.” When you interact with your horse in a way that he understands, you’ll get results. But if you keep doing the same thing, you’ll keep getting the same results. If you want a different reaction from your horse and want to progress your horsemanship, you’ll have to change the way you work around him and start seeing things from his point of view.

Ultimately, it comes back to us. If you want your horse’s behavior to change, you have to be willing to change yourself first. A lot of people are unhappy with their horse’s performance, but they’re unwilling to change themselves and the way they interact with their horse. People come up to me all the time and ask, “Clinton, have you ever met a horse that couldn’t be trained?”

My answer is no, but I’ve met millions of owners who didn’t want to be trained. Every horse is trainable, but not every person is trainable because they don’t want to learn new ideas or change their habits. Your horsemanship dreams are attainable if you’re willing to put in the effort. But you have to be willing to work at it and have a burning desire to be the best horseman you can be

Tipsy Tuesday

The greatest cure known is physical labor.

"Emotions are sometimes strange, volatile, and unpredictable. They do not always respond to logic and reason. They do, however, respond to action. If you have occasional feelings of loneliness, discouragement, or discontentment, the best way to kill such negative emotions is to work them to death. Almost nothing is as bad as it first seems, and there's nothing like a hard day's work to put everything in proper perspective. When you begin to feel negative emotions, dwelling on your misfortunes only makes you feel worse. Do your best to put them out of your mind and think about more positive, constructive things. Physical labor can help. Choose a task that doesn't require a great deal of concentration, and then focus on accomplishing the task at hand".

My Mother Donna Burns is my best teacher on this. She certainly has not had an easy life. Burying two sons and a husband, keeping the company together despite all the ever changes of a western retail business as well as running the Indian Blanket Seat Cover business which she founded.
Her deep strength seems to come from working hard. She never took any time off for anything. She is such a great example of work ethic to our family. Her home and business are well organized and clean. Everyone loves when "Grandma Red" brings them homemade treats or invites them over for delicious home cooked meals.
She loves sports and games, and loves watching her family participate in events.
Thanks to her for all the encouragement to get in and work hard. Burns would not have made it without her.

Stay Young My Friend

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Try everything twice.
On one woman ' s tombstone she said she wanted this epitaph:
"Tried everything twice. Loved it both times!"

2. Keep only cheerful friends.
The grouches pull you down.
(Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches!)

3. Keep learning:
Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever...
Never let the brain get idle. 'An idle mind is the devil ' s workshop. '
And the devil ' s name is Alzheimer ' s!

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud.
Laugh until you gasp for breath.
And if you have a friend who makes you laugh,
spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.

6.. The tears happen:
Endure, grieve, and move on.
The only person who is with us our entire life, is ourselves.
LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love:
Whether it ' s family, pets, keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever.
Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health:
If it is good, preserve it. If it is unstable, improve it.
If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don ' t take guilt trips..
Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.

My dear friend and team mate Randi Jorgensen sent me this. A big thank you for 15 years of service with Burns Saddlery. She is WONDERFUL! We LOVE YOU RANDI!!

Training Tip of the Week:
Don’t turn it into a fight.

If your horse is ignoring you when you apply pressure, rather than getting into a pushing match with him by using steady pressure, knock him off balance by using driving pressure. Remember, driving pressure has a rhythmic beat to it and makes it hard for a horse to ignore – one, two, three, four; one, two, three, four. With every set of four numbers you'll increase the pressure until the horse finds the right answer.

Tipsy Tuesday

The individual who has time only for gossip and slander is too busy for success.

Each of us has a finite amount of time, energy, and money; you must choose for yourself how you will spend them. If you elect to squander your resources by demeaning others in an attempt to advance your own interests, you will soon find that so much of your time and energy has been spent on gossip and slander that you have little time left for yourself. If you deal in malicious information, you'll rarely be trusted. As the saying goes, "Those who talk about others to us will talk about us to others."
Napoleon Hill

A friend sent a quote that I frequently think about and use to guide my mind and conversations.

"Small minds discuss PEOPLE. Average minds discuss EVENTS. Great minds discuss IDEAS!"

Politeness usually begins at home or it doesn’t begin at all.

"Politeness to others is usually born out of respect for the individual, which you learn as a child. When you are treated with respect by other members of the family, you learn to respect them as well. The self-esteem that results from being recognized as a unique person by the people who matter most to you helps you develop the confidence necessary to succeed later in life. Politeness and consideration for others are habits that -- once developed -- usually stay with you for a lifetime. While common courtesy may seem relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things, it is a reflection of more basic values. More important, if you develop the habit of respecting others, you are likely to command respect from them."

Napoleon Hill

How true!!!
Polite people are wonderful to be around. Their observant nature is constantly looking for ways to assist, complement, and serve. Polite people use language to create feelings of happiness and meaning, elevating everyone they meet.

Inspire Me

Great achievement is born of a struggle.

Our strength grows out of our weakness, said Ralph Waldo Emerson. "Not until we are pricked and stung and sorely shot at, awakens the indignation which arms itself with secret forces." Strife and struggle can inspire you to overcome adversity and to propel yourself to real achievement. View every struggle as an opportunity for personal growth. It is the struggle itself, not the result that builds character. If you know you are right, stay the course even though the whole world seems to be against you and everyone you know questions your judgment. When you prevail -- and you eventually will if you stick to the job -- they will all tell you that they knew all along you could do it.

Studying Napoleon Hill's 17 principles for success has changed my life. Timeless in nature, direct, helpful and full of daily inspiration, Napoleon Hill is one of my many mentors and heros.

The Zen Proverb, "When the student is ready the teacher appears" this discribes how I felt when Napoleon Hills work came into my life.

On this Mothers Day, I give thanks for my dear Mother, Mother-in-Law, and for my three beautiful children and six, perfect grandchildren. All have taught me the most important of lifes lessons. LOVE!!

Zen Horse

Training Tip of the Week:
Encountering obstacles on the trail.
By Clinton Anderson

Anytime you encounter an obstacle your horse is unsure of, use the Approach and Retreat Method to build his confidence. Approach the obstacle and just before your horse wants to turn away or stop, retreat and take him away from it. It’s like a game of cat and mouse. The more you retreat, the more curious and confident your horse will get until eventually, he’ll cross the obstacle.

Great tip Clint for horses and humans. When we approach an obstacle we may back off of it, turn away, retreat from it, think about it, gain more confidence to revisit the obstacle and eventually we will cross the big rocks in our lives.

Dream Big

Don’t look to the stars for the cause of your misfortunes: look to yourself to get better results.

There are many things you cannot control, but you can control the only things that really matter: your mind and your attitude. External forces have very little to do with success. Those who program themselves for success find a way to succeed even in the most difficult of circumstances. Solutions to most problems come from one source and one source alone: yourself. Living life to the fullest is a lot like shooting the rapids in a rubber raft. Once you've made the commitment, it's difficult to change your mind, turn around, and paddle upstream to placid waters. But it's the excitement and adventure that make it all worthwhile. If you never make the attempt, you may never know the depths of despair, but neither will you experience the exhilaration of success.

The privilege of bringing children into the world carries with it the responsibility of teaching them the fundamentals of sound character.

"One of life's greatest joys is the sense of wonder that accompanies the arrival of a tiny new human being into the world. But that joy is accompanied by a tremendous responsibility that perfectly encapsulates the need for personal initiative. You can provide children with all the physical advantages of a good childhood, but unless you strive to set a good example for them to follow, you will know only dismay as they reach adulthood and blossom into purposeless drifters. Your personal initiative, whether or not you are raising a child, must always incorporate exemplary behavior. You cannot take ethical shortcuts, big or small, without other people observing them and assuming that this behavior is something you wouldn't mind having turned back on yourself. Certainly you will make mistakes, but if you have always striven for the best course, others will remember it and treat you accordingly."

Words from Napoleon Hill.

The most difficult, un-trained job I have ever undertaken is being a parent. It is much easier being a grandparent. Now that is a great JOB!!

Inspire Me

A most beneficial use of time is silent meditation, while searching for guidance from within.

"We all experience rare moments when a blinding revelation comes to us, when we suddenly see things differently than ever before. Usually, however, we learn the truth about ourselves gradually, over long periods of time, from quiet introspection. We are all spiritual, but some of us have learned to tap more effectively into the great strength that resides in the spiritual portion of ourselves. The spirit is not boisterous and noisy. Getting in touch with your spiritual self demands tranquility and solitude. Make sure you dedicate a portion of every day to thought and study, to think and reflect upon your life. Choose a time and place that best allow you to relax your mind and devote your thoughts to reflection."
