Love the Opportunity by Jim Rohn

Somebody said you have to love what you do, but that’s not necessarily true. What is true is that you have to love the opportunity. The opportunity to build life, future, health, success and fortune. Knocking on someone’s door or making that extra call may not be something you love to do, but you love the opportunity of what might be behind that door or call.

For example, a guy says, “I’m digging ditches. Should I love digging ditches?” The answer is, “No, you don’t have to love digging ditches, but if it is your first entry onto the ladder of success, you say, ‘I’m glad somebody gave me the opportunity to dig ditches and I’m going to do it so well, I won’t be here long.’”

You can be inspired by having found something; even though you are making mistakes in the beginning and even though it is a little distasteful taking on a new discipline that you haven’t learned before. You don’t have to love it, you just have to learn to appreciate where you live, appreciate opportunity and appreciate the person who brought you the good news—who found you.

Appreciate the person who believed in you before you believed in yourself, appreciate the person who said, “Hey, if I can do it, you can do it.”

If you will embrace the disciplines associated with the new opportunity you will soon find that your self-confidence starts to grow, that you go from being a skeptic to being a believer. And soon, when you go out person to person, talking to people, you will find it to be the most thrilling opportunity in the world. Every person you meet—what could it be? Unlimited! Maybe a friend for life. The next person could be an open door to retiring. The next person could be a colleague for years to come. It’s big-time stuff. And sometimes in the beginning when we are just getting started we don’t always see how big it is.

So, before you are tempted to give up or get discouraged, remember all success is based on long-term commitment, faith, discipline, attitude and a few stepping stones along the way. You might not like the stone you are on right now, but it’s sure to be one of the stones that lead to great opportunities in the future.

Training Tip of the Week:
A common mistake to avoid
By Clinton Anderson

The biggest mistake people make when working with horses is forgetting about the prey/predator relationship. To be fair, it’s easy for us to forget that we’re predators because as a general rule, the contact we have with the animal world is mostly limited to other predators, whether it be with other people or our pet dogs and cats. We get accustomed to interacting with other predators and forget that when we’re around our horses, they don’t think the same way that we do. In fact, until we teach them otherwise, our horses view us as a threat. To effectively communicate with your horse, it’s important that you understand what sets the two of you apart and how you can act less like a predator when you’re around him.

The Four Emotions That Can Lead to Life Change by Jim Rohn

Emotions are the most powerful forces inside us. Under the power of emotions, human beings can perform the most heroic (as well as barbaric) acts. To a great degree, civilization itself can be defined as the intelligent channeling of human emotion. Emotions are fuel and the mind is the pilot, which together propel the ship of civilized progress.

Which emotions cause people to act? There are four basic ones; each, or a combination of several, can trigger the most incredible activity. The day that you allow these emotions to fuel your desire is the day you’ll turn your life around.

Disgust
One does not usually equate the word “disgust” with positive action. And yet properly channeled, disgust can change a person’s life. The person who feels disgusted has reached a point of no return. He or she is ready to throw down the gauntlet at life and say, “I’ve had it!” That’s what I said after many humiliating experiences at age 25. I said, “I don’t want to live like this anymore. I’ve had it with being broke. I’ve had it with being embarrassed, and I’ve had it with lying.”

Yes, productive feelings of disgust come when a person says, “Enough is enough.”

The “guy” has finally had it with mediocrity. He’s had it with those awful sick feelings of fear, pain and humiliation. He then decides he is “not going to live like this anymore.” Look out! This could be the day that turns a life around. Call it what you will: the “I’ve had it” day, the “never again” day, the “enough’s enough” day. Whatever you call it, it’s powerful! There is nothing so life-changing as gut-wrenching disgust!

Decision
Most of us need to be pushed to the wall to make decisions. And once we reach this point, we have to deal with the conflicting emotions that come with making them. We have reached a fork in the road. Now this fork can be a two-prong, three-prong, or even a four-prong fork. No wonder that decision-making can create knots in stomachs, keep us awake in the middle of the night, or make us break out in a cold sweat.

Making life-changing decisions can be likened to internal civil war. Conflicting armies of emotions, each with its own arsenal of reasons, battle each other for supremacy of our minds. And our resulting decisions, whether bold or timid, well thought out or impulsive, can either set the course of action or blind it.

I don’t have much advice to give you about decision-making except this: Whatever you do, don’t camp at the fork in the road. Decide. It’s far better to make a wrong decision than to not make one at all. Each of us must confront our emotional turmoil and sort out our feelings.

Desire
How does one gain desire? I don’t think I can answer this directly because there are many ways. But I do know two things about desire:

A. It comes from the inside not the outside.
B. It can be triggered by outside forces.

Almost anything can trigger desire. It’s a matter of timing as much as preparation. It might be a song that tugs at the heart. It might be a memorable sermon. It might be a movie, a conversation with a friend, a confrontation with the enemy, or a bitter experience. Even a book or an article such as this one can trigger the inner mechanism that will make some people say, “I want it now!”

Therefore, while searching for your “hot button” of pure, raw desire, welcome into your life each positive experience. Don’t erect a wall to protect you from experiencing life. The same wall that keeps out your disappointment also keeps out the sunlight of enriching experiences. So let life touch you. The next touch could be the one that turns your life around.

Resolve
Resolve says, “I will.” These two words are among the most potent in the English language. I WILL. Benjamin Disraeli, the great British statesman, once said, “Nothing can resist a human will that will stake even its existence on the extent of its purpose.” In other words, when someone resolves to “do or die,” nothing can stop him.

The mountain climber says, “I will climb the mountain. They’ve told me it’s too high, it’s too far, it’s too steep, it’s too rocky, it’s too difficult. But it’s my mountain. I will climb it. You’ll soon see me waving from the top or you’ll never see me, because unless I reach the peak, I’m not coming back.” Who can argue with such resolve?

When confronted with such iron-will determination, I can see Time, Fate and Circumstance calling a hasty conference and deciding, “We might as well let him have his dream. He’s said he’s going to get there or die trying.”

The best definition for “resolve” I’ve ever heard came from a schoolgirl in Foster City, California. As is my custom, I was lecturing about success to a group of bright kids at a junior high school. I asked, “Who can tell me what ‘resolve’ means?” Several hands went up, and I did get some pretty good definitions. But the last was the best. A shy girl from the back of the room got up and said with quiet intensity, “I think resolve means promising yourself you will never give up.” That’s it! That’s the best definition I’ve ever heard: PROMISE YOURSELF YOU’LL NEVER GIVE UP.

Think about it! How long should a baby try to learn how to walk? How long would you give the average baby before you say, “That’s it, you’ve had your chance”? You say that’s crazy? Of course it is. Any mother would say, “My baby is going to keep trying until he learns how to walk!” No wonder everyone walks.

There is a vital lesson in this. Ask yourself, “How long am I going to work to make my dreams come true?” I suggest you answer, “As long as it takes.” That’s what these four emotions are all about.

Training Tip of the Week:
It’s not a race!
By Clinton Anderson

If your horse wants to turn a trail ride into a race with the other horses, instead of pulling back on both reins in an effort to slow him down, find a way to redirect his excess energy and get control of his feet. Pick up on one rein and bend him in a circle around your leg. Then change directions and bend him the other way. When the horse is working well and has his attention on you, put him back on a loose rein and continue on your ride. If he starts to pick up speed and head after the horses in front of him, bend him down again. Be thorough and consistent in your training. Bait the horse. Dare him to make a mistake. When he does, let him commit to the mistake - and then take steps to fix the problem. Pretty soon, he won’t speed up because he knows that if he does, it just means more work.

Tipsy Tuesday

It is always better to imitate a successful man than to envy him.

"Of all the negative emotions, envy is perhaps the most insidious. It is especially sinister because it destroys you from the inside by replacing all that is positive and productive with negative feelings of anger, jealousy, and despair. But when you congratulate others upon their successes and genuinely wish them well, not only do you give credit to those who deserve it, but you also feel better about yourself. Once you've overcome your envy, you may want to determine what specific actions the other person took to achieve success. Meanwhile, you will have strengthened your relationships by recognizing the achievements of others."

Learning from successful people is one of my favorite obsessions. Getting curious about their thought patterns, business strategies, what they do with their spare time. Asking what traits and components do they have that I do not currently posses is a powerful way to connect with self discovery.

Listening and reading success principles from those who have become an expert in their fields tickle my imagination with possibilities for my mind and business advancement. Discussing ideas about success instead on envying people that have achieved success advances oneself in the direction of successes.

Happy Successful Trails,

Growth: Don't join an easy crowd. You won't grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform and achieve are high.

Training Tip of the Week:
Be aware of your actions.
By Clinton Anderson

Horses are experts at reading body language. When you work with your horse, you must be aware of what you say to him non-verbally because he is always aware of it, even if you’re not. This means that you need to be very consistent with your body language. When you want the horse to relax and stay calm, your body language must be very relaxed. If you want the horse to move, your body language should be more assertive and direct.

Upper and lower case letters are named 'upper' and 'lower', because in the time when all original print had to be set in individual letters, the 'upper case' letters were stored in the case on top of the case that stored the smaller, 'lower case' letters.
The proper term for upper case letters is "majuscule" and for lower case it's "minuscule".
The printing industry gives us other popular phrases, such as "mind your 'p's and 'q's." The moveable block type had the letters in reverse so they would read correctly when imprinted on paper. Apprentices had to remove the type from the pages and return the blocks to their upper and lower cases. Each drawer in the case held a different size of letters, and each drawer was divided into compartments (called sorts) for each letter. The letters 'p' and 'q' could easily be mistaken, so the master printer would advise their apprentices to mind their 'p's and 'q's.

When the master printer was building a page and discovered that a particular sort was empty, he would get angry. Thus the term "out of sorts".
The question mark came from a monk habit of writing the Latin word for question, quo, at the end of sentences. Over time, the letters were ---written vertically to save space and morphed into the ? we write today. Similarly, the exclamation point came from the Latin word "Lo", meaning something important that should be heeded. (Lo and behold...)

You either ride life or it rides you. Your mental attitude determines who is “rider” and who is “horse.”

There is no compromise or negotiation when it comes to who will run your life. Either you take charge and live a productive life of your choosing or you allow yourself to be ruled by circumstances. But there will inevitably be setbacks. In the old West, a cowboy expression went, "There never was a horse that couldn't be rode, and there never was a rider that couldn't be throwed." Like everyone else, you will have days when everything goes right and you are on top of the world. Relish those days, enjoy them, and remember them. Recall the euphoria that accompanied them when you need an extra measure of positive thinking to get back in the saddle after you've experienced an embarrassing and painful fall.

Inspire Me

Neale Donald Walsh sent me the following...

there is a Chinese proverb: Great doubts deep
wisdom. Small doubts little wisdom.

Never stop doubting, never stop questioning, never,
ever assume you have all the answers. Having all the
answers kills the question itself; renders it lifeless --
and you, too...

Keep looking, keep seeking. Never, ever find it all.
Because when you find it all, you deny that there is
more. And there is never not more.

Inspire Me

Neale Donald Walsh's message this beautiful springtime morning...truth spoken is a gift given. Truth withheld is more than a gift denied, it is an arrow aimed at the heart.

It has been said that "the truth hurts," but the exact
opposite is true. No truth is too hurtful , and no lie is
harmless. Because every truth opens your heart to
another, and every lie separates it.

Yet know this: The way you say your truth can be hurtful.
So speak your truth, but soothe your words with peace.

Don’t turn it into a fight.
Clinton Anderson

If your horse is ignoring you when you apply pressure, rather than getting into a pushing match with him by using steady pressure, knock him off balance by using driving pressure. Remember, driving pressure has a rhythmic beat to it and makes it hard for a horse to ignore – one, two, three, four; one, two, three, four. With every set of four numbers you'll increase the pressure until the horse finds the right answer.
